THE ENTREPRENEUR’S SHORTCUT

Searching, Buying and Growing Businesses

The playbook for Australian acquisition entrepreneurs, drawn from hundreds of conversations with searchers, investors and operators across Australia and Canada.

WHY THIS BOOK

Australia is where Canada was ten years ago. More than 230,000 Australian small business owners are approaching retirement, and a generation of acquisition entrepreneurs is stepping up to buy and grow their businesses. The playbook for doing that here barely exists.

The Entrepreneur’s Shortcut compresses hundreds of conversations with Australian and Canadian searchers, investors and operators into the guide none of them had: what worked, what failed, and what they would do differently. Canada is a decade ahead in entrepreneurship through acquisition. This book brings those lessons home.

What you will learn

  • Choose your path: traditional search fund, self-funded search, or holding structure
  • Build your investor group: backers who coach you, not crowd you
  • Search in an immature market: finding good businesses when brokers have never heard of a search fund
  • Buy enduringly profitable businesses: what to look for, and which deals to walk away from
  • Structure, close and transition: offers, financing, due diligence and your first 90 days
  • Operate, grow and exit: boards, investors and the endgame

Who it is for

Aspiring searchers and operators weighing entrepreneurship through acquisition against a startup or a corporate career. Business owners thinking about succession. Investors who want to understand this asset class before it arrives in force.

About the author

Chris Davey is the founder of Search Fund Oz and founder and Managing Director of Accountica, a boutique accounting and M&A advisory firm on the Gold Coast. An FCPA and GAICD, he has spent six years helping build the entrepreneurship through acquisition ecosystem in Australia, back when “search fund” got you blank looks at most networking events. He guest lectures on search funds and ETA at Bond University, and led the petition for an SBA-equivalent government loan guarantee for SME acquisitions, which received a formal ministerial response. The Entrepreneur’s Shortcut is the playbook he wishes had existed.
